Behind the scenes of Minna & Mike’s Beloved Session

March 25, 2012 · 14 Comments

Last week me and Steph (aka Fairy Nuff Flowers) went for a little road trip down to beautiful Dorset. The reason for our trip was a fusion shoot we’d been planning with fashion and bridal wear designer Minna for quite some time. The purpose was to see whether it was possible to combine fashion and Beloved, and from my part at least I can say that the results are even better than I hoped for! It was such a magical day. Here are some behind the scenes snaps where you can see Steph working her flowery magic, and Grace Revington creating Minna’s beautiful make-up. Look out for pictures from the session later on.

Elizabeth & Steven | Beloved

November 9, 2011 · 14 Comments

I think I’ve made it pretty clear by now how much I love doing these Beloved sessions. As much as I adore photographing people getting engaged and all the happiness of their wedding day, there’s just something very special about photographing a couple who’s been together for longer. It’s comforting to find those roles and routines that keeps a relationship ticking, but as years go by we tend to forget to take the time to really have fun with each other like we did at the beginning. Beloved sessions are such a lovely way to reconnect and spend some quality time together. It’s like they give a permission to forget our busy lives for a while and just have a giggle and remember all the things we love about our chosen partner.

This Beloved session with Elizabeth & Steven was such a joy. Despite the threat of rain when we headed to Bushy Park, amazingly, when we got there the sun came out to play with us and made the gorgeous colours of the autumn shine. Watching these two was so very lovely, I got to laugh along with them, I got to feel moved, and when I got home I just felt incredibly grateful to be able to do a job such as this. At it’s best it can be pretty amazing. Thank you Elizabeth & Steven. x

Roz & Severin | Beloved

November 1, 2011 · 10 Comments

Roz & Severin are known as one of the hardest working (and also the loveliest!) couples among wedding professionals. Most of the time they are super busy running Hepburn Collection, creating beautiful hair styles for brides and models. Since they are literally always working and rarely have time to spend quality time together, Sev decided to surprise Roz on her birthday with a booking for a Beloved session with yours truly. Personally I think Roz & Sev are pretty much the ideal couple I had in mind when I decided to start offering dedicated Beloved sessions, a couple who has been together for a long time and deserves to take some time out of their busy lives to reconnect and to enjoy each others company.

At first Roz wasn’t sure about being in front of the camera (oh I know how she feels!), but she bravely agreed to the session – and I’m so glad she did. Below are her thoughts about the experience in her own words:

‘The day arrived. Now what could Marianne do with a tired married couple who quite frankly could potentially ruin her lovely camera? You will be amazed! Our shoot was to be at Bushy Park and it was an awesome day – the sky was blue, not too cold and the colours of autumn were breathtaking. So far so good. Now for the serious stuff, our minds were racing. How is she going to do this? How will we respond to her instructions? Now of course I couldn’t possibly tell you all, as this would ruin ‘the experience’ but let me just say, she was incredible and we felt so comfortable in her presence. I would even go so far as to say it was easy.

I had always thought these shoots were primarily for the engaged couple just before their big day. BUT believe me when I say that they can be for anyone. I’m sure most of you will agree that being married can sometimes be a little busy so taking time out is really important. This shoot for us was like therapy, we laughed until it hurt, felt re-energised, relaxed and more importantly we had reconnected. Marianne and her camera had captured something very special between us, being in love! Thank you Marianne.’

Well, what can I say… thank YOU Roz and Sev, for trusting me so completely and for being as cute and in love as a teenage couple! I loved every minute of our session and would be very happy if this was what I got to do for the rest of my life. I will never ever tire of witnessing people in love. x

P.S. look out for a feature on Roz & Sev’s Beloved session over at Love My Dress today.

Hannah & Brendan | Beloved

October 28, 2011 · 21 Comments

Hannah & Brendan didn’t really book a Beloved session as such, as I wasn’t yet offering them at the time. They just wanted some nice pictures of the two of them to celebrate their first wedding anniversary, and to document some of their favourite spots in London. But a Beloved session, if a quite light-hearted one taking into consideration the central location, is pretty much what they got. I just love to get couples to play, act silly and have some fun together – we should all do more of that on daily basis I think!

Oh and the light. It bucketed it down just before the start of our session. But when we got into it, the rain stopped and the sun came out in a spectacular way. Magic!

Kat & Gareth | Beloved

March 16, 2011 · 39 Comments

We’ve been planning on doing this Beloved session with Kat and Gareth ever since I attended Life {as an artform} in Manchester last year, and I asked Kat to be my guinea pig while still on the train back home. It took us a while to synchronise our busy calendars, but finally, nearly a year later, we made it happen!

Since Kat & Gareth have been together for nine years, of which they’ve been married for 3, they were the perfect couple to explore the Beloved experience with. Beloved sessions consist of different exercises, called invites, which have a way of bringing the couple into the present moment and into a state where they are not afraid to show their true selves and explore the connection they have. I’ve used some of the more physical invites in my engagement sessions to break the ice, but this was the first session where it was 99% Beloved techniques as opposed to traditional posing, so it definitely felt like a big step.

The weather was grey and a bit damp when we headed out to Richmond Park, but that didn’t bother us much, the energy between Kat & Gareth would be enough to keep a small village warm! I had such an amazing time, and it was so nice to see how even the more serious invites work beautifully. I’ve always been most interested in capturing the genuine emotion and the authentic dynamics between a couple, and I love the way I can really explore those with these techniques.

Do watch the slideshow of this Beloved session if you have a minute. Be sure to have your speakers on if you do. :)

P.S. If you are a photographer reading this, and interested in the concept of Beloved and in encouraging genuine emotions and interactions in both your work and in your life, do join me and others at this year’s Life {as an artform} in London.
