Alix & Emmanuel | Wedding

September 6, 2010 · 55 Comments

On a beautiful weekend in July we made a long (and rather adventurous!) journey to a picturesque little village in France to cover Alix & Manu’s wedding. Words can’t really do justice to this place, it was like stepping into a postcard, or a fairytale. I have to say, I do love being a photographer! Not only because I get to record memories for my clients, but also because looking at the pictures lets me relive magical events and remember the places I’ve visited myself.

There were so many beautiful details in this wedding that I wouldn’t know where to start, but I have to mention the gorgeous gown that Alix designed herself, which was made at the Maria Lucia Hohan atelier – it really was a piece of art, even more delicate and magical in real life than in pictures!

I would like to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to my assistant Susanna Hauru, who’s been an amazing help this summer. I’ve certainly had some adventures this year, and I’m glad she’s been there to share most of them!

p.s. Do also check out Alix’s blog for the fabulous honeymoon pictures – oh my, talk about paradise!

Victoria & William | Wedding

August 23, 2010 · 23 Comments

Vee & Will got married in a tiny little village called Little Bardfield deep in the Essex countryside. Their intimate humanist ceremony, coupled with a topsy turvy wedding day schedule, created a special day that really reflected their fun personalities. Hill House, Will’s childhood home, made for a magical setting, and the different marquees dotted around the grounds ingeniously divided the outside space into different areas according to the different stages of the day.

There were so many things I loved about this wedding, from the fun relaxed atmosphere and Pimm’s in the garden, to the quirky hat-themed seating plan, but my favourite has to be the gorgeous flowers – they were just beyond beautiful!

I don’t know whether it was the remote location which made the darkness feel darker, but when the evening fell at Vee & Will’s wedding, I realised that this crazy summer has almost come to an end. When we drove off into the pitch black night, leaving the wedding party tearing it up on the dance floor, I found myself feeling quite nostalgic… Not to worry though, the season is nowhere near finished yet, September and October are chock-a-block with lovely weddings to look forward to.

But first, let me take you back to rural Essex….

Sarah & James | Wedding

August 2, 2010 · 21 Comments

I seriously am the luckiest girl ever to get to photograph the coolest of clients and the most amazing weddings! Looking back at this passing summer I feel overwhelmed by all the beauty I’ve gotten to witness.

The pretty-factor in Sarah and James’ Suffolk wedding was definitely up there! The venue, amazing Bruisyard Hall, was one of the most gorgeous places I’ve ever got to visit. Sarah looked absolutely stunning in her Monsoon dress and Louboutins, only to be rivalled by the beauty of the surroundings and the amazing flowers from Sweet Peas and Bumble Bees, who are dedicated to growing beautiful eco-friendly flowers.

And get this, there was archery! Yes, archery! It looked like such good fun that this was one of the only times I’ve worked at a wedding wishing that I was taking part rather than documenting.

Everything at this wedding was so beautiful and well thought-out, in Sarah’s own words a lot of the credit goes to her ‘incredibly talented, creative and hard working Mum who made bunting & lavender bags, scoured charity shops for linen and plates, made 250 scones as well as planning all of the other food, arranged everything and was a total star. And the whole day wouldn’t have happened without our friends and families who made all the food, arranged flowers, BBQ’d, decorated the marquee and did a dozen other jobs to make the day AMAZING.’ Hear hear!

Before I head to Essex for today’s garden wedding, here’s a super sneaky peek from Alix & Manu’s wedding in France. I’m off to Finland next week (for a few days of hols + a wedding), but can’t wait to get stuck in processing this gorgeous wedding on my return. Keep an eye out for future updates on Alix’s blog, where you can also find links to some pics from her super stylish guests!

Sophie & Henry | Wedding

July 29, 2010 · 28 Comments

Sophie & Henry got married in Solihull on a sunny but windy Saturday at the start of July. I had been waiting for this wedding for what seems like forever! We had such a blast during Sophie and Henry’s engagement session last September that I just couldn’t wait to see them again and find out what their wedding would look like. And as suspected, it was all absolutely beautiful!

I just adored Sophie’s gorgeous Pronovias gown and her ridiculously high pink heels from asos, so elegant and girly at the same time. The beautiful peony bouquet from Fleur De Lis really completed the look – LOVE peonies!

The ceremony of Sophie and Henry’s wedding took place in the beautiful Church of St Mary the Virgin, followed by a reception at the Punchbowl, a stunning country pub in Lapworth. Sophie hired the jugs, cake stands, bunting and sweet jars from Vintage Teas & RSVPs. She arranged the table flowers (from Birmingham wholesale markets) herself, with the help of her mum and friends – and her dad grew the sweet peas that were in the jam jars on the top table.

I so enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of this wedding, and I had so much fun hanging out with Sophie and Henry again after all this time. I really wish you guys all the best in your future, you rock!

Jacqueline & Simon | Wedding

July 22, 2010 · 23 Comments

During yesterday’s engagement session in central London I was feeling a little bit shell shocked by the amount of people and hustle and bustle everywhere. I think I just figured out the reason why! I’ve spent most of the summer covering weddings all over the UK, from cliff tops to quiet little villages, where the most ‘bustle’ you might bump into is a cow or two or perhaps a sheep – so it’s really no wonder I’ve forgotten how busy London can feel! Jacqueline & Simon’s wedding is a prime example of the lovely places I’ve got to visit this summer.

Jacqueline and Simon got married at the church of St. Nicholas Bratton St. Maur, with a reception at Bratton Farm House, in the gorgeous little village of Bratton Seymour in Somerset. I can’t tell you how beautiful a setting the village and the farm house were for a wedding! The day was amazing through and through, with a lovely relaxed atmosphere and so many beautiful touches, from Jacqueline’s exquisite Jenny Packham gown to the wild flower arrangements and all the little antique details. This really was the perfect garden wedding!

Thanks so much Jacqui and Simon for having me, I hope you’re having an awesome time on your honeymoon!

Rebecca & Andi | Wedding

July 1, 2010 · 37 Comments

If there was one wedding I had been waiting for impatiently for absolutely ages, it had to be Rebecca & Andi’s Cornwall wedding! Most people know that I’m a huge fan of Cornwall, and try to get down there as often as I can, so when Becks contacted me over a year ago about covering what she described as ‘party of a lifetime’ down in Cornwall I jumped at the chance! I can’t quite believe that the party is now over – but the memories of this most awesome wedding ever will remain with me forever.

Becks and the girls got ready at The Watergate Bay Hotel, which sits on one of the most beautiful beaches ever. Lil and Bridie at Kelly Anza, Penzance did a beautiful job on their hair, and makeup artist Suzi Winter made sure that everyone looked pretty as can be. Becks’ beautiful  Temperley dress and Manolo Blahnik heels created such a lovely nostalgic look, and her Royst and Aran headdress really set the whole look off. The colour theme at this wedding was baby blue and red, and the gorgeous customised bridesmaids’ dresses from Anoushka G and red (burlesque!) shoes from Bordello fit so well into it.

The ceremony took place at the Chapel of the Franciscan Monastery of Lanherne in St Mawgan in Pydar, where only a couple of weddings in a year are allowed. Guests travelled to the reception at Bre Pen Farm in fantastic 1950’s coaches from King Harry Coaches, while the wedding party arrived in iconic wedding VWs from Cornwall VW Wedding Hire. The party itself was held in a marquee on a cliff top overlooking the sea, which was absolutely one of the most amazing places I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending a wedding at! Here’s what Becks told me about her vision for the wedding:

‘I collected all the jam jars and glassware myself and it was all inspired by “The Darling Buds of May”, but also we wanted it to reflect festivals (wellies) and our Northern/Greek/Cornish connections. It was a big-ish wedding, but I wanted everyone to feel like they got looked after and almost like they received a “hug” from all of the little details! The gingham tablecloths and bunting were made by my mum and  the vintage lace tablecloths and vintage china were sourced by me and friends from charity shops and flea markets! The strawberry plants were grown for the occasion by a friend.’

‘The flowers (George Mackay Flowers) were so important to me and we even used apples (to reflect the origin of my name ‘Crabtree’) and olive branches for Andi’s Cypriot roots. We wanted it to reflect two people joining together. The rest were seasonal, mainly native and used to create a “just picked” feel.’

‘Another aspect of the day that was important was that we wanted to show how we don’t take ourselves too seriously and had quite ironic touches such as naming the tables after some of the worst nightclubs we’ve frequented over the years (as we met in our teens in a BAD nightclub) and giving everyone kebabs later in the evening to soak up the booze!’

‘The food (catering by Round Kitchen) was, again, slightly retro and ironic in theme and we went for old-fashioned desserts like trifle and black forest gateau.’

I think that’s more than enough for the introduction, let’s get to the pictures and relive this incredible party. Enjoy!

Also a huge thank you to Susanna, as always, and to Maz from Light and Day Photography, who came along to assist and to be ‘on call’ in case my ankle couldn’t take the long day up on a hill.

Rose & Brendan | Wedding

June 22, 2010 · 41 Comments

Where do I start! Rose & Brendan’s garden tea party wedding at the Larmer Tree Gardens in Dorset really was a pretty special affair. I don’t think my words could ever do it justice (hence I take photos), so I’ll borrow some words from the bride herself – this is how she described her theme for the wedding: ‘I’m a sucker for tradition, but I love tiny personal details. For the day I wanted to create a real inside outside feel – like a vintage 1940s tea dance that has come through time and ended up in a garden –  so everything’s a little distressed from the elements but still beautiful.’

Rose and the bridesmaids got ready at the gorgeous Launceston Farm, which really set the mood for the day from the start. Rose’s dress and veil were from Pronovias Bond Street, her shoes were Louboutin and her lovely little bag was a last minute buy from Monsoon Bridal.

One thing that made this wedding feel very special, was the fact that the whole wedding party was just 14 people in total (Brendan lost his best man as he had to be onboard his Navy ship on the day of the wedding as the queen was visiting). It really felt exceptional to be a part of such an intimate party, and it made for a beautifully relaxed day – the often normal ‘stresses’ of a wedding day seemed far away. I still can’t get over how beautiful all the carefully selected details looked. Here’s what Rose told me about them: ‘I collected a lot of mercury glass as it looks like formal interior decorative items that have been left outside – silver glass that has been worn away with sun and rain. They came from places such as Niki Jones, Cox & Cox, Graham & Green, and from antique shops.’

‘The candelabras were from eBay and all our cut glass vases, candle sticks, bowls and ornaments were all vintage/charity shop finds. There are some fantastic charity shops in Devon and Cornwall where you can find the best things for a bargain. Woodside is probably the all time best where most of the things came from.’

‘I used all country garden based flowers that were in season, very unstructured – no “floristry” as such, just flowers in pots and vases. I ordered all our flowers through our local market Petals Florists and we made our bouquets and buttonholes ourselves the night before the wedding. My mum did all the vases at the venue for us in the morning before the wedding.’

I should mention that Rose is a designer and she made all the table cloths and linens, and designed and made all the beautiful stationery herself (Rose’s website). ‘I tried to keep all the stationary formal in style as I really like formality, but like the contradiction that it was a garden party event,’ she said. I think that in itself sums up the feel of this wedding.

Thank you so much Rose and Brendan for letting us share your stunning and intimate wedding day, we really felt privileged! Thank you also to Susanna (whom I really should thank at the end of most weddings, as she’s quickly become my ‘right hand woman’), without whom I probably couldn’t have covered this wedding as it was the first one after injuring my ankle.

Anna & Chris | Wedding

June 7, 2010 · 29 Comments

It’s a rainy day in Cornwall today so I thought I’d make the most of being stuck indoors and finally give you a full post on Anna & Chris’ beautiful Surrey wedding.

For this wedding we got to travel to the picturesque village of Chiddingfold in Surrey. Anna and the girls got ready at the incredibly atmospheric over 400 years old Crown Inn Hotel, while the boys were enjoying a drink to ease their nerves in the pub downstairs.

Both the ceremony and the reception took place at the stunning Ramster country house, which bathed in glorious sunshine all day. Since Anna and Chris were to became Mr and Mrs Wood, there was a nature/wooden theme running through the decorations. I really adored the wild flower arrangements and all the ‘wooden’ stationary. Such prettiness everywhere!

One of my favourite parts of the day has to be when after the speeches all the guests joined in to serenade the bride with one of her favourite songs. Such a great surprise and a beautiful moment!

Amy & Jonny | Wedding

May 26, 2010 · 20 Comments

It’s been a bit of a traumatic week so far, as on Monday, on my way to a engagement session, I fell down some stairs that gave way due to rust and tore the ligaments in my ankle. Ouch doesn’t quite cover it! It’s been a busy week rescheduling things and arranging for cover and extra help for upcoming events. Fingers crossed I’ll be back on my feet soon though!

In order to cheer us all up I’m finally posting some pictures from Amy & Jonny’s super pretty Kent wedding. I have to say I really adored Amy’s style on the day. Amy’s gorgeous dress and veil were by Amanda Wakely Sposa and her beautiful hair bloom, an ivory feather peony which I absolutely l-o-v-e-d, was designed and made by Yasmin Rizvi. Her perfectly ‘imperfect’ hair was carefully teased into place by Victoria Boorman and her make up was done by Vicky Snepp from Space NK in Tunbridge Wells.

The ceremony took place in the charming St Peter’s Church in Ightham, made really special by the beautiful singing from the members of the City of London Choir (with soloist Louisa Brown). This was followed by a reception in the family garden, held in a marquee decorated beautifully with flower arrangements made by a family friend, Judy Debenham (who was responsible for the gorgeous boquets as well), and lots of personal touches, such as the cute lavender bags made by Amy’s mum and the napkins which were made by Amy herself from fabric off-cuts from Cabbages and Roses‘ gorgeous fabrics. Henrietta Donovan was in charge of the catering and I must say that all the food looked simply divine!

I feel so privileged to have been a part of this lovely wedding, with such loving atmosphere and beauty all around. I wish Amy and Jonny all the best in their future adventures together! <3

Sam & Adam | Wedding

April 29, 2010 · 27 Comments

I’m so stoked to finally be able to blog Sam & Adam’s stunning Andaz wedding! I know it’s so so wrong to have ‘favourite’ clients, but if I was forced to rank my clients (at, you know, gunpoint or something) Sam and Adam would come way up there. They’re just so cool and nice and super talented, and they really made us feel like we were a part of the celebration.

Sam looked absolutely stunning from head to toe, from her gorgeous Marchesa gown to her cool Nicholas Kirkwood heels, and Adam very dapper indeed in his Dunhill suit. What with Sam and Adam – and a lot of their guests – being fashion designers, the coolness factor was definitely very high in this wedding! :D

No matter how many weddings I shoot at the Andaz, it seems that there are always new spaces to discover. This time, after ceremony in the Fenchurch room, the wedding breakfast was held at the Studio, which looked absolutely stunning, not least because of the gorgeous flowers by Scarlet & Violet (oh and the cake, by Maki’s Cakes, was pretty stunning too).

After dinner the party continued in the Temple. It was really nice to bump into familiar DJs, the Wedding Smashers, once again. These guys really do know how to rock a house!

A million thanks Sam and Adam for making us feel like we were a part of your super cool ‘family’! I know the ash cloud provided you with some extra days on honeymoon, which you totally deserved! :D

Sarah & Paul | Wedding

March 24, 2010 · 18 Comments

What made Sarah & Paul’s Andaz Liverpool Street wedding a little bit different from the others we’re doing there this year, was that their ceremony was held at the OBE Chapel of St. Paul’s Cathedral. I felt very privileged being able to photograph a wedding at such a prestigious venue, and despite the challenges it presented (the Chapel is underground in the crypt with no light, and photography during the ceremony is restricted) it really was an amazing experience!

I love the Gallery at the Andaz, the light there is always so lovely, no matter what time of year. It’s also fun to see how different spaces within the hotel transform to serve different functions. For example, Sarah & Paul’s wedding breakfast took place in the Bishopsgate room, which looked completely transformed from last time when we where there for a ceremony.

I do have to mention that Susanna was on fire during the reception of this wedding, she got so many lovely shots that I had a hard time narrowing the selection down! I think after the long dark winter of her being consigned to lighting duties during receptions, she was seriously itching to get behind the camera – and it shows.

Lastly, I have to say thank you to Sarah and Paul. It was a priviledge to be a part of your beautiful day!

Caroline & Ben | Wedding

March 15, 2010 · 36 Comments

I’m so happy to finally be able to blog about Caroline & Ben’s beautiful London wedding. There are so many things I loved about this wedding, from Caroline’s stunning Jenny Packham gown and headpiece, to the gorgeous Market Suite at the Fox & Anchor where Caroline and the girls were getting ready, through to the beautiful ceremony at Islington Town Hall and reception at The Crypt. There was a real London feel about this wedding, and I loved the fact that when we went for a little portrait shoot with Caroline and Ben after the ceremony, we just hailed a black cab. When in London…

Thanks so much C&B for letting us be a part of your beautiful day!

Lucy & Jeremy | Wedding

March 4, 2010 · 38 Comments

First of all, can I just go on record and say that St. Bartholomew The Great is quite possibly the most gorgeous church I’ve ever had the pleasure to visit. Tucked away behind London’s Smithfield Market, it’s so inconspicuous from the outside that you would never guess at the gorgeousness inside. I’m not alone in my opinion either, proved by the fact that St. Barts has been used as a location in several films. It certainly provided a breathtaking backdrop to Lucy & Jeremy’s wedding ceremony.

Mind you, it wasn’t just the church that was impressive, the reception at The Royal Exchange was equally stunning. These amazing venues, and the attention to details, did make me feel like I was lost in a movie or a fairytale for the day.

Thanks Lucy and Jeremy for letting us share your magical day with you, I hope you’re enjoying your kick-ass honeymoon as we speak!

Simona & Dan | Wedding

February 18, 2010 · 35 Comments

Ooh I do love an Andaz Liverpool Street wedding! Luckily I have quite a few of them coming up, but Simona & Dan’s was the first one this year, which makes it a little bit special. The ceremony of Simona & Dan’s wedding took place in the Bishopsgate Room of the Andaz, while their drinks reception was held at the Gallery and dinner in the gorgeous 1901 restaurant. I have to say that I was blown away by how Simona had planned every little detail SO perfectly. From her gorgeous Vera Wang gown, to the purple colour theme running through the day, everything looked just absolutely sublime!

After the speeches guests piled onto an old London bus, which ferried us over to the St Mary Axe at the top of the Gherkin. Despite the darkness and the fog, the views from up there very pretty spectacular. What a place to dance the night away! Oh and a special shout out goes to the boys from Wedding Smashers who did a seriously good job on the decks. If you’re in search of the coolest wedding DJ’s in town, look no further.

Thank you so much Dan and (princess) Simona! I loved every minute of your beautiful wedding and I hope you will always be as happy together as you were on the day. <3

Katie & Sam | Wedding

January 15, 2010 · 12 Comments

Heeere we go! Finally I can show you the last wedding of 2009. Phew! Katie and Sam got married at Hassop Hall in Derbyshire on a very cold December day right after Christmas. Despite all the travelling, and the rather miserable weather, this wedding was an absolute joy to attend. If I had to think of one word to describe Katie, it would probably be exuberant. She was so full of joy on her wedding day, and that joy spread through everyone present. You might remember from their engagement shoot that Sam and cameras don’t exactly get along… I must say though that he was on his very best behaviour all day, and was even game for some portraits in the bathroom!

Hassop Hall itself was a gorgeous venue, and I really hope I’ll get to go back there as it would be nice to make use of the beautiful grounds on a day where icy rain wasn’t involved…

Thanks so much Katie and Sam for having us, I hope you have a long and happy life together!
